"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple famous fans have openly petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the best groups, they're a close gang. Their videos repeatedly depict them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to start a band."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The trio have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words detail breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent confidence required a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global audience.

However the sister act will forever be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
