Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
