Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
