The Fast-Food Giant Takes Down Artificial Intelligence Holiday Commercial Following Public Outcry.
The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday commercial created using Artificial Intelligence following encountering significant public disapproval.
The 45-second spot was produced with the help of AI-generated video and was initially released publicly for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.
Viewer Reaction and Decision to Pull
Following its publication, viewers on social media lambasted the employment of AI in the film. Several described it as "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This incident serves as an key learning as we explore the proper application of Artificial Intelligence," said a statement from the company.
The commercial was developed for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of situations that might go awry over the holidays, using the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".
A Growing Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that feature AI-created content have emerged as a rising trend among large companies, particularly for the holiday period.
- Another beverage giant has also released consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
- Inherent Limitations: As videos created with current AI video tools are prone to distort the longer they run, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
- Industry Concerns: The ad also raised worries about the replacement of human roles in the creative industry, with some commenters stating it might reduce opportunities for camera crews.
Response from the Creators
Following the ad being taken down, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.
She stated, the development took "seven weeks" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any standard production".
"This wasn't just an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "It was a film."
Mixed Audience Sentiment
While the McDonald's ad was largely panned, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been varied.
For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday spot from another major brand reportedly received a 61% "positive feedback" from online commenters.
However, various brands have also received criticism for employing AI in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".
The situation underscores the ongoing debate within the marketing and production sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and audience reception.
