Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Leader and State Executive as National Guard Arrive in City

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on social media early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Chicago region under orders from the current government, despite vehement protests from state officials such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, stating: "I will not back down. Now Trump is demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, military units from Texas had reached the Elwood training facility, an army base approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government advances with its hardline urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has called Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", despite official statistics indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, including homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 state guard members were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with another 300 state military forces readying for deployment, according to sources. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and their facilities.

Soldiers in combat attire with state guard patches were observed at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were set up in lines. Extra barriers was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for security reasons until early December.

The administration has intensified immigration enforcement in Chicago in the past month, triggering protests, particularly near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, asking a federal judge to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their case is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also issued an directive on that day prohibiting ICE officers and others from using municipal facilities as staging areas for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "justify and make acceptable the presence of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. However, the president has said he would be prepared to invoke the emergency powers, which permits a president to send regular army in states that are unable to put down an insurrection or are resisting federal law.

After beginning his second term, the president has dispatched or mentioned deploying troops to over ten urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Statistics shows that serious offenses across the US has decreased in recent years. In the city, for instance, homicides were down nearly one-third to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

New survey data released on Wednesday revealed that most Americans oppose the deployment of military forces without an foreign danger.
